Students, faculty, and administrators gathered in Oeschele Hall Wednesday evening to discuss the growing need for conversation and community after several incidents on campus went beyond what President Dan Weiss described as "garden variety" mischief.

Following alleged racial remarks aimed at students sidewalk chalking messages for Presidential Candidate Barack Obama two weeks ago, Public Safety reported two more serious incidents Sunday.

Honors College advisor dies

Antonia McMenamin, better known as "Toni," a long-time faculty member of the Pennoni Honors College, died early May 13 after a long-time battle with cancer.

McMenamin, who suffered from leukemia and became prone to infections in recent months, was removed from life support May 10, according to Mark Greenberg, dean of the Honors College.

PVCA proposes new parking rules

The Powelton Village Civic Association will vote May 19 to extend the Powelton residential permit parking hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through 8 a.m. tthrough 8 p.m.

The preliminary yield rate for the class of 2012 fell to 63 percent, leading the admissions office to utilize its waitlist more extensively this year.

The percentage of students accepted before May 1 who decided to enroll is down from the 66-percent yield at this time last year.

Stephen Stakey, a freshman at Stony Brook University, passed out during the annual Roth Regatta on May 2. He was taken to the Stony Brook University Medical Center where he died later that day. He was 19.

The cause of Stakey's death is still unknown, pending an autopsy, his mother, Cathy Stakey, said.

Controversy continues to mount over the ever-rising bar for gaining admission to CUNY senior colleges.

The beginning of this year marked the implementation of the toughest admissions requirements since the 1998 termination of CUNY's open admissions. CUNY's 2007 decision to raise the required cutoff for SAT and New York State Regents math scores went into effect this past admissions season, with a higher cutoff for SAT and New York State Regents verbal scores soon to follow.

The rally and teach-in, initiated by the Hunter Chapter of the Professional Staff Congress, the union that represents CUNY's faculty and staff, was part of an historic event.

New InfoNET screens and kiosks will be added around campus as part of the Division of Student Life and Administrative Service's "Power of Ten" initiative, according to Rita LaRue, senior associate vice president for Business Services.

Three kiosks will be placed around campus: one in the Main Building, one in the Creese Student Center and one outside of the Rush Building on 33rd Street.

Drug-related arrests in the U.S. has drastically increased since the early 1980s with more African-Americans now losing their freedom than any other race, according to two new reports released last week by civil rights groups.

"Most drug offenders are white, but most of the drug offenders sent to prison are black," stated Jamie Fellner, Human Rights Watch's senior counsel in the U.

On Wednesday, May 7, only six days after the U.S. House of Representatives gave final approval of the "Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act of 2008," President George W. Bush signed the bill into law.

"With this bill signed into law, students and families now have every assurance that they will continue to have access to all the federal student loans they are eligible for, no matter what happens in the nation's financial markets," said Chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor George Miller.
