Head coach Greg Schiano dropped a bomb Wednesday afternoon when he announced that true freshman Tom Savage will start at quarterback for the Rutgers football team this weekend against Howard. Matthew Stein and Sam Hellman break down what this means and discuss the rapport Savage has built with fellow freshman Mohamed Sanu.

Schiano made the correct move. The sooner Savage gets some game time, the faster the program will improve. Watching Natale was painful. He wasn't making his reads quickly enough, not hitting the receivers coming out of their breaks by holding onto the ball too long. It looked like had never practiced with those guys - didn't have any timing with them at all.But none of this matters if the defense can't stop the other team. I don't know what kind of rabbit Schiano can pullout of his hat if people are slow, arm tackle or blow coverages.

It was going to happen, sooner or later, but college coaches should give 5th year seniors a little more respect and allow them an opportunity before replacing them with the prospect. Natale was better than Teel, but Teel wasn't replaced after a far less capable Nevada team trounced him and a first half of the season that was deplorable. And let's remember, Teel had 2 high NFL drafted WRs last season, and in prior years, 2 of the best RBs RU has ever had.

I disagree. Coach Schiano didn't drop a bomb at all. I think he made the only reasoned, logical decision he could make at this juncture. Now that Tom Savage's first year of eligibility was 'spent' after one second half, it would be imprudent in light of his performance not to start him. Further, since the team will be playing the less proficient and capable teams in the coming weeks, it should present him with the perfect opportunity for the offense to gel and for the starters to become comfortable with their new quarterback. I maintain it is a logical no brainer and not a bomb in any kind. Mr. Savage is a mature young man with an impressive skill set. Way to go, Coach Schiano. Right decision for all the right reasons.
